US Clarifies Routine Visa Shift: Abuja Embassy Remains Operational as Services Move to Lagos Hub

The United States Mission in Nigeria has clarified that the realignment of routine visa processing across Africa will not affect the overall operating status of its embassy in Abuja.

The statement follows an announcement by the U.S. Department of State regarding the centralization of routine visa services into designated regional hubs across the continent, effective August 1, 2026. Under the new arrangement, routine visa operations previously handled in Abuja are being redirected to the U.S. Consulate in Lagos, which has been designated as Nigeria’s regional visa hub.

According to the U.S. Mission, the administrative shift is strictly limited to routine visa processing and will not result in the closure of the Abuja embassy, which continues to handle its core diplomatic, consular, and bilateral functions.

The Department of State explained that the regional restructuring aims to enhance national security, streamline administrative efficiency, and establish uniform screening standards across international posts. Similar realignments cover routine nonimmigrant visas such as tourist, business, and petition-based categories as well as immigrant visa services, including family-preference, employment-based, Diversity Visas, and adoption cases.

U.S. officials emphasized that all existing valid visas remain completely unaffected by the restructuring. Applicants scheduling new appointments or seeking routine visa services for Nigeria are directed to utilize the designated regional hub in Lagos.
