US Strengthens Nigerian Troops with Advanced Military Training Programme

The United States has intensified military training support for Nigerian troops, focusing on key operational skills aimed at improving security cooperation and strengthening the capacity of the country’s armed forces.

The training programme, conducted in Bauchi State, covered several areas, including unmanned aircraft systems, combat casualty care, weapons handling, camouflage techniques, water treatment, explosive ordnance disposal, and small-unit tactical operations.

The initiative forms part of ongoing security collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, designed to enhance military readiness, operational effectiveness, and long-term defence partnerships.

During the exercise, Nigerian personnel received both classroom instruction and practical field training. Special attention was given to unmanned aircraft systems, with participants gaining hands-on experience in operating drones and learning how aerial intelligence can support military operations.

The training programme was developed based on operational needs identified by Nigerian military authorities, alongside areas of expertise offered by US military personnel. Officials involved in the exercise noted that the collaboration provides an opportunity for both countries to exchange knowledge and improve interoperability during joint operations.

Beyond technical skills, the programme also encouraged closer interaction between service members of both nations, helping to strengthen professional relationships and cooperation at different levels.

Military officials said additional training activities are being planned as both countries continue to explore new areas for collaboration and capacity building.

The expanded training support comes amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria and reflects continued efforts by both nations to enhance defence cooperation, intelligence sharing, and counterterrorism capabilities.
