US Temporarily Lifts Sanctions on Iranian Oil Exports Through August

The United States Treasury Department announced on Monday a temporary suspension of sanctions on Iran, permitting the country to resume the production, sale, and transportation of crude oil and related petroleum products. This waiver is set to remain in effect until 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on August 21, 2026.

The decision follows ongoing diplomatic negotiations between the two nations. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that the move is tied to Tehran’s recent commitments, which include guaranteeing “free and open transit” for vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, Iran has agreed to grant access to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors, allowing for monitoring of facilities within its borders.

The Treasury’s issued license authorizes transactions that were previously prohibited under American economic sanctions, marking a significant, albeit limited, shift in trade policy. While the suspension provides a temporary window for Iranian oil exports, the administration has framed the action as a direct response to progress in high-level discussions regarding regional security and nuclear transparency.
