Venezuela Quakes Death Toll Surpasses 900 as Rescue Efforts Continue
A massive humanitarian crisis is unfolding across northern Venezuela after a pair of powerful earthquakes struck the country on Wednesday night, leaving at least 920 people dead and tens of thousands missing.
The twin quakes, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, hit within minutes of each other, marking the most significant seismic event to strike the nation in over a century. Official reports confirm that at least 3,360 individuals have sustained injuries, while an estimated 50,000 people remain unaccounted for as emergency responders search through the debris of 383 damaged or collapsed structures.
La Guaira has been identified as the epicenter of the destruction. The area has been placed under military control to manage the chaotic recovery efforts and ensure that emergency vehicles have unobstructed access to hospitals. “We appreciate the overwhelming desire to help, but the roads we are using to transport the injured are becoming congested,” said Jorge Rodriguez, head of the National Assembly. “The best way to help is to keep the roads clear.”
The situation remains critical as rescue teams, hampered by a lack of heavy machinery, struggle to locate at least 172 people believed to be trapped beneath concrete rubble. Ongoing aftershocks have further complicated these operations, with local communities often forced to resort to basic hand tools to clear debris and search for survivors.
The damage has extended to critical infrastructure, forcing the closure of the Maiquetía “Simón Bolívar” International Airport and severing key logistics channels. In response, the government has established central supply depots in Caracas to organize the distribution of food, water, and medical aid.
International concern is mounting as the U.S. Geological Survey warns that the final death toll could escalate significantly, potentially reaching into the thousands. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has signaled that the United States is preparing a rapid and large-scale response to assist in the recovery mission.
As the search enters a critical window, desperate families are utilizing dedicated digital platforms to track loved ones, while government officials continue structural assessments of buildings across the affected region.
