Veteran Politician Peter Mandelson Resigns from House of Lords Amid Epstein Fallout

Lord Peter Mandelson, a senior figure in the Labour Party and former UK ambassador to the United States, has resigned from the House of Lords. His departure follows renewed scrutiny of his connections to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and allegations he shared confidential government information.
The resignation, confirmed by the Speaker of the Lords on Tuesday, pre-empts emergency government legislation that had been prepared to remove him from Parliament’s upper chamber.
The controversy stems from a vast release of documents related to Epstein by the U.S. Department of Justice. These files reveal extensive communication between Mandelson and Epstein, raising serious questions about the former minister’s conduct during his time in office.
Authorities are now examining allegations that Mandelson passed market-sensitive and official information to Epstein. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who dismissed Mandelson from his ambassadorial role last September over the Epstein links, has ordered a full review of their contacts during Mandelson’s government service.
A government spokesperson stated the correspondence appears to include privileged information related to the 2008 financial crisis, which “should never have been shared outside official channels.”
The documents also indicate financial links. Records show three payments from Epstein in 2003-04, totaling $75,000, to accounts connected to Mandelson or his partner. In 2009, Epstein sent £10,000 to cover an osteopathy course for Mandelson’s partner an act Mandelson later called a “lapse in judgment.”
Further communications suggest Mandelson, while serving as Business Secretary, promised to lobby ministers on a tax issue for Epstein and shared an internal government report on post-crisis economic strategies. A particularly notable email from May 2010 informed Epstein of a pending €500 billion European bailout hours before its public announcement.
Mandelson, who also resigned from the Labour Party over the weekend, stated he did not wish to cause the party “further embarrassment.” He has said he does not recall receiving the funds noted in the documents and will investigate their authenticity.
Jeffrey Epstein died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. The ongoing release of documents related to his network continues to trigger repercussions for his high-profile associates.
