X to Suspend Creators Who Post Undisclosed AI Videos of War Zones
Social media platform X has announced a new policy targeting AI-generated content related to armed conflicts, threatening to suspend creators from its revenue-sharing programme for 90 days if they post such videos without clear disclosure.
The rule change, announced Tuesday by a company executive, aims to combat what the platform described as a growing threat to information authenticity, particularly amid ongoing tensions involving the US, Israel and Iran.
Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said the policy was prompted by concerns that artificial intelligence tools now make it “trivial to create content that can mislead people” during sensitive periods.
“During times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground,” Bier stated.
The platform said it would “continue to refine” its policies to ensure users can trust the information they encounter during critical moments.
The move marks a notable shift for X, which has faced sustained criticism over its content moderation approach since Elon Musk acquired the platform then known as Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022. Since taking over, Musk’s team has largely rolled back previous misinformation policies, characterising them as censorship.
Under the revised rules, violations will be identified through Community Notes, the platform’s crowd-sourced fact-checking feature, as well as through metadata and technical signals embedded in AI-generated content.
Repeat offenders risk permanent removal from the Creator Revenue Sharing programme, which compensates eligible users based on advertising revenue generated by their posts.
