35 Million Nigerians Facing Acute Hunger in Coming Months

About 35 million people across Nigeria are likely to experience acute food insecurity between June and August this year, making the country one of the world’s largest hunger crises.

The burden falls overwhelmingly on the northern part of the nation. Nearly one in seven Nigerians is at risk during the upcoming lean season.

Across the North-west and North-east, an estimated 6.4 million children are likely to be acutely malnourished in 2026.

If life-saving assistance is further delayed, millions of families will be forced to reduce meals further, sell off assets, or withdraw their children from school, leading to long-term consequences.

A humanitarian appeal for 516 million dollars to address the crisis remains insufficiently funded. As of May 2026, only 215 million dollars had been received, representing just over 40 percent of the required amount. Urgent funding is needed to scale up assistance.
