3,500 to undergo rehabilitation at Kano reformative centre -Coordinator

The Kano State Reformative Centre, Kiru, says it is currently managing 3,500 clients, who are set to undergo various indoor and outdoor rehabilitation and reintegration programmes across the state.

The Coordinator of the Centre, Ms Cheryl Aminta-Kwagga, disclosed this on Wednesday in Kano during a one-day capacity-building training organised for the 44 Local Government Chairmen.

The training is with the theme: “United Against Drug Abuse: A Collective Community Based Strategy of Drug Abuse Rehabilitation and Reintegration “Local solutions, United strength: Combating Drug Abuse Through Grassroot Leadership”.

She explained that the Centre provided a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation, combining medical treatment, counselling, and vocational skills acquisition.

“Proper rehabilitation lasts for six months, followed by another six months of reintegration, during which clients are trained in various trades and monitored for stability,” she said.

Aminta-Kwagga added that the Centre had expanded its operations with the establishment of a new reformative facility in Gaya, while plans were underway to build additional centres across the three senatorial districts.

She said the initiative to train the local government chairmen was to strengthen community participation and ensure that grassroots leaders took ownership of the campaign against drug abuse.

“Across our communities, drug abuse continues to destroy families, fuel insecurity, and weaken the productive capacity of our youths. This calls for coordinated action at all levels,” she said.

The coordinator described local government chairmen as key players in the fight against drug abuse, being the closest to the people and best positioned to promote prevention and rehabilitation at the grassroots.

“This training equips you with practical tools to translate policies into measurable actions that can restore hope and stability within our communities,” she stated.

Declaring the training open, the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam-Gwarzo, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Alhaji Mustapha Rabiu-Kwankwaso, said the initiative reflected the state government’s commitment to tackling drug abuse through inclusive and community-based approaches.

He noted that the administration of Gov. Abba Yusuf was determined to strengthen institutions that promoted rehabilitation and reintegration of victims of substance abuse.

“The theme of this programme is both timely and strategic. Drug abuse is not only a health challenge but a social and security threat that requires local action and collaboration,” he said.

Also speaking, the Kano State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, represented by DCN Maimuna Garba-Muhammad, said drug abuse remained a serious public health and social concern.

He said NDLEA would continue to work closely with local governments, community leaders, and other stakeholders to achieve a drug-free society.

“Our collective responsibility is to ensure that no community is left behind in this campaign against drug abuse,” he added.

Tinubu extends tenure of Surveyor-General, Adebomehin

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a two-year tenure extension for the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Mr. AbuduGaniyu Adebomehin, with effect from January 5, 2026.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the extension followed the recent transfer of the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) to the Presidency.

The decision, the statement noted, is aimed at ensuring the continuity and completion of critical reforms already initiated by Mr. Adebomehin in Nigeria’s geospatial data and land management systems.

President Tinubu, who expressed confidence in Adebomehin’s leadership, tasked him with consolidating reforms in national land administration, highways and abutting land infrastructure coordination, reclamation and erosion control programmes, and other strategic national projects.

Adebomehin, who was appointed Surveyor-General of the Federation by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 5, 2022, is expected to deepen institutional reforms designed to modernize mapping, survey standards, and digital land information systems across the country.

The tenure extension reinforces the administration’s commitment to effective land governance, infrastructure planning, and geospatial intelligence as key enablers of sustainable national development.

Nnamdi Kanu lists Malami, Wike, Umahi, Sanwo-Olu, Danjuma, Buratai, others, as witnesses

Mr Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has listed former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, as his witness in his ongoing alleged terrorism trial.

Kanu, in a fresh motion he personally signed and filed before Justice Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, assured that he was ready to begin his defence as ordered by the court.

Freedomonline reports that the motion, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015 and dated Oct. 20, was filed Oct. 21.

The application was titled: “Notice of Number and Names of Witnesses to be Called by the Defendant and Request for Witness Summons/Subpoena and the Variation of the Time Within Which to Defend the Counts/Charges against the Defendant.”

The IPOB leader said the motion was “pursuant to the order of this honourable court made on the 16th day of October 2015, directing the defendant to commence his defence on the 24th day of October 2025.”

Kanu informed the court of his plan to call a total of 23 witnesses divided into two categories.

The first category, he said, would be those he called “ordinary but material witnesses.”

He further informed the court that his second category of witnesses would be “vital and compellable” and shall be “summoned under Section 232 of the Evidence Act, 2011.”

He prayed the court that, in view of the number of witnesses he intends to call, the court should consider granting a 90-day timeframe to enable him conclude his defence.

He told the court that he would “testify on his own behalf, providing a sworn account of the facts, denying the allegations, and explaining the political context of his statements and actions.”

Among those Kanu listed as “compellable witnesses” are the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike; a former Minister of Defence, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd); former Chief of Army Staff, Gen Tukur Buratai (rtd), Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and Gov. Hope Uzodinma of Imo.

Others are Minister of Works, Dave Umahi; the immediate-past Governor of Abia, Okezie Ikpeazu; the immediate-past Director General (DG), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar; former DG of the State Security Service, Yusuf Bichi, and several witnesses whose identities he didn’t reveal.

Kanu, in the motion, promised to “provide the sworn statements of all voluntary witnesses to this honourable court, and to notify the prosecution within a reasonable time.”

He assured that “no precious time of the honourable court would be delayed.”

Besides, Kanu assured that “it would interest the honourable court and the general public that justice is not only done but manifestly seen to have been done.”

The latest motion came after the detained IPOB leader had, on Thursday, filed a motion of preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court to continue with his trial.

He had filed the objection the same day a team of medical experts enpanelled by the court to determine his health status, turned in a report that he was medically fit to stand trial.

Meanwhile, a magistrate court in Abuja, on Tuesday, ordered the remand of Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and 12 others who were arrested during the protest organised by Omoyele Sowore on Monday against the IPOB leader’s continued trial and detention.

The police charged the 13 persons with various offences, including criminal conspiracy, disobedience of a lawful order, inciting disturbance, and disturbance of public peace, in contravention of Sections 152, 114, and 113 of the Penal Code Law.

The 13 defendants named in two separate first information reports (FIRs) are Ejimakor, Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel; Joshua Emmanuel; Wilson Anyalewechi; Okere Nnamdi; Clinton Chimeneze; Gabriel Joshua; Isiaka Husseini; Onyekachi Ferdinand; Amadi Prince; Edison Ojisom; Godwill Obioma; and Chima Onuchukwu.

The magistrate ordered that the defendants be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre pending their arraignment on Oct. 24.
