Driver’s Recklessness Claims LAWMA Operative’s Life
A tragic incident occurred on Meran Road, inward Iyana Ekoro axis, Lagos, where a Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) operative lost her life in a road traffic accident. The female worker was diligently performing her environmental sanitation duties when a blue Ford commercial bus (BDG 495 YH) recklessly reversed on the expressway, hitting her.
The impact, particularly to the head region, was fatal. The driver, attempting to evade accountability, fled the scene but was apprehended by LASTMA officers on traffic surveillance duties and handed over to the Meiran Police Division for investigation and prosecution.
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed deep anguish over the preventable incident, condemning the act of reversing on an expressway as a serious traffic offence. He commended LASTMA officers for their swift response in apprehending the suspect and preventing a potential breach of public peace.
The deceased’s remains were evacuated by LAWMA officials, and condolences were extended to the bereaved family and colleagues. This incident follows a recent similar accident involving a truck collision that left two dead and three critically injured.
Bakare-Oki warned motorists against reckless driving practices, emphasizing the need for adherence to traffic laws to prevent needless fatalities.
