Ebonyi Govt Releases 25 Inmates in Bid to Decongest Prisons

The Ebonyi State Government has facilitated the release of 25 inmates as part of efforts to decongest the Nigerian Correctional Service in the state. Speaking at the event in Abakaliki, the Governor’s wife, Mrs Uzoamaka Nwifuru, said the initiative aims to strengthen the justice delivery system and provide a second chance for rehabilitation.

The release was a collaboration between Nwifuru’s pet project, Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Persons, and the state Ministry of Justice. Nwifuru described the occasion as “deeply emotional and meaningful,” emphasizing that no life is beyond redemption.

She stated, “Justice must be tempered with mercy, and correction must lead to restoration. These 25 individuals are stepping out into freedom, hope, and a new beginning.” Nwifuru advocates for rehabilitation and empowering released inmates with tools to rebuild their lives.

Attorney-General Ben Odoh commended Nwifuru’s efforts and urged the freed inmates to embrace their new lives. He noted the correctional centre is overcrowded, housing 1,018 persons despite being built for 387. The centres in Abakaliki and Afikpo accommodate 1,205 inmates.

Correctional Centre Controller Chika Igwugwu thanked Nwifuru for her efforts and encouraged her to continue the initiative.
