Seven members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists have died and four others were injured in a fatal road accident in Gombe State on Monday evening, the Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed.

The crash involved a bus carrying journalists who were returning from a wedding ceremony in the Gombe South Senatorial District. The victims were part of a delegation that had attended the wedding of a colleague, an employee of the Nigerian Television Authority.

Gombe State FRSC Sector Commander, Samson Kaura, confirmed that 11 people were involved in the lone accident, with seven fatalities occurring on the spot.

“From the information available to us, 11 people were involved in the crash. Sadly, seven of them died on the spot, while four others sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Kaura stated.

Preliminary investigations suggest the crash was caused by a tyre burst, possibly followed by sudden braking that caused the vehicle to somersault.

FRSC rescue teams were immediately deployed to the scene and are still conducting recovery operations. The injured have been taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

A comprehensive report on the accident will be released once investigations are completed.
