Obi Joins ADC,Urges Opposition to Unite and ‘Rescue Nigeria

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The former Anambra State governor announced the move in a New Year address in Enugu, framing it as a step toward building a broad national coalition to address Nigeria’s challenges.

Obi called on his supporters and opposition leaders to unite under the ADC to “rescue Nigeria from poverty, disunity and democratic decline.” He described the nation as being at a critical turning point, citing widespread poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.

“With over 130 million Nigerians living in multidimensional poverty and more than 80 million youths unemployed, our people are in persistent agony,” Obi stated. He argued that leadership failure, not a lack of resources, is responsible for the country’s condition.

While criticizing the current administration for economic mismanagement and what he called the erosion of democratic values, Obi emphasized the need for credible elections and electoral reforms ahead of 2027. He also questioned the government’s recent tax reforms, describing them as anti-people.

Drawing an international comparison, Obi noted that Indonesia, which had similar starting points to Nigeria, has become a trillion-dollar economy, while Nigeria faces de-industrialization and deepening poverty.

His defection is widely seen as a strategic realignment ahead of the next general elections, with Obi positioning the ADC as a platform for unified opposition action.
