Senator Opeyemi Bamidele

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has dismissed claims that Nigeria’s newly enacted tax reforms are intended to inflict hardship on citizens. He stated the laws are a “people-centred intervention” to strengthen the nation’s fiscal base and improve living standards.

In a statement addressing growing public criticism, Bamidele insisted the intent of the legislation has been misrepresented. He explained the core objective of the 2025 Tax Reforms Act is to harmonise Nigeria’s tax system and eliminate multiple taxation, effective from January 1, 2026.

The Senate Leader reaffirmed the legislature’s support for the administration’s policy direction while rejecting what he called the “rubber stamp narrative.”

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has affirmed the implementation of the new tax laws will proceed as scheduled, describing them as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to build a fair fiscal foundation for the country.
