Minority Lawmakers Urge President Tinubu to Tackle Security and Economic Crises in New Year Call

The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has called on President Bola Tinubu to take urgent and decisive action to address the nation’s pressing challenges of insecurity, inflation, and corruption.

In a New Year statement released on Thursday, the caucus warned that the severe hardships faced by Nigerians require a more robust governmental response. The message was signed by the Minority Leader, Mr. Kingsley Chinda, and three other principal officers.

The lawmakers pointed to the difficult socio-economic conditions of the past year, highlighting widespread insecurity, spiraling inflation, and persistent unemployment as major threats to national stability and development. They noted that these issues have combined to deepen poverty and disrupt livelihoods across the country.

“The situation of our country, particularly in 2025, was worrisome,” the statement read in part. “The rising trend of insecurity across the country remains disturbing. Spiraling inflation, debilitating hunger and corrosive poverty were evident in the lives of many people.”

The caucus emphasized that sustainable progress is impossible without peace and safety, urging the administration to prioritize comprehensive security reforms in 2026. They stressed the need for the government to “ingeniously address infrastructure deficits, youth unemployment and brazen corruption,” adding that such efforts must be “sincere, deliberate and intentional.”

While directing their appeal to the government, the lawmakers also highlighted the role of citizens and all leaders in nation-building. They described Nigeria as a nation with immense potential, arguing that unity and the harnessing of its diversity are key to overcoming current difficulties.

“Nigeria is a blessed nation with enormous potential, and our diversity remains one of our greatest assets,” the statement continued. The caucus pledged that, in its legislative role, it would remain focused on issues affecting citizen well-being in the coming year.

The call comes amid ongoing security challenges ranging from insurgency and banditry to violent crime, alongside economic pressures that continue to strain households nationwide.
