Kano Government Insists Corruption Cases Against Ganduje Proceed Despite Political Truce
The Kano State Government has clarified that the corruption allegations against former governor Abdullahi Ganduje are still active in court, despite the current governor’s recent political alignment with the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ganduje’s party.
State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, stated that the judicial process concerning the allegations is proceeding independently. This follows public scrutiny of Governor Abba Yusuf’s apparent political reconciliation with Ganduje, a figure he had previously accused of widespread corruption while in opposition.
“The government has not in any way withdrawn any allegations. Any corruption allegation is still there, and it is before the judicial processes,” Waiya said during a live television interview. He emphasized that Governor Yusuf does not interfere with the judiciary.
The commissioner described the governor’s recent public appearances with Ganduje and other APC leaders as part of a broader effort to foster unity and a “new Kano,” focused on development and reconciliation.
When questioned on the compatibility of reconciliation with unresolved corruption cases, Waiya pointed to the legal presumption of innocence. “No court of law has ever pronounced him guilty of such charges… the cases are still going on,” he stated.
The political shift has sparked speculation about Governor Yusuf’s strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Waiya denied that the move was primarily motivated by electoral calculations, framing it as part of a collective effort to address national challenges. However, he affirmed that the corruption cases against the former governor would continue to follow due legal process.
