Falconets Edge Senegal in U-20 World Cup Qualifier Amid Injury Concern
Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Senegal in the first leg of their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier on Saturday, though the win was overshadowed by a serious injury to star forward Janet Akekoromowei.
The match remained goalless until the 51st minute when defender Kindness Ifeanyi headed in from a corner to give Nigeria the lead. Despite creating further chances, the Falconets were unable to extend their advantage.
The major setback occurred in the 38th minute when Akekoromowei, a key player for the team, suffered a dislocated ankle after a solo run and had to be stretchered off the pitch. She was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.
Akekoromowei’s absence was felt by the squad. Team captain Joy Igbokwe acknowledged the emotional impact, stating, “When the injury occurred, we almost fell apart, but our coach encouraged us to continue.” Head coach Moses Aduku said an update on her condition would be provided after further assessment.
The 18-year-old forward is the reigning Nigeria Women Football League Most Valuable Player and has attracted interest from top European clubs. Her potential absence would be a significant blow to Nigeria’s qualifying campaign.
The Falconets will now prepare for the second leg in Dakar next Saturday, progressing with a slender lead but deep concern for their injured teammate.
