Aiyedatiwa Pledges Support for Volunteer Groups, Launches UN Year in Ondo

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has declared his administration’s readiness to collaborate with volunteer organisations to drive the state’s development agenda, describing them as essential partners in governance.

Governor Aiyedatiwa made this known on Sunday during the official launch of the United Nations International Volunteer Year 2026, held in Akure. Represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Humanitarian and Community Integration, Muyiwa Eyitayo, the governor underscored the importance of structured volunteerism in complementing government efforts across critical sectors.

He highlighted the role of the newly established Ondo State Volunteer Service, which is designed to coordinate activities, create a supportive environment, and expand the reach of voluntary organisations and individuals.

“Volunteers in Ondo State have played a critical role in complementing development efforts in environmental sustainability, community sensitisation, youth engagement, and health interventions. You have stood in the gap,” Aiyedatiwa stated.

Acknowledging the limitations of government, the governor emphasised that sustainable development requires collective responsibility. He assured volunteer groups of continued support to ensure they can operate effectively and expand their impact.

Earlier in his remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Volunteer Service and convener of the event, Iwakun Charles, described the launch as a renewed call to service. He noted that volunteerism fosters unity and bridges social gaps, aligning the state with the United Nations’ global vision to celebrate and amplify the contributions of volunteers. He also commended the governor for prioritising youth development and civic engagement.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Adebukola described volunteerism as a catalyst for sustainable development. She explained that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) require grassroots participation to move beyond policy frameworks into tangible action.

“Volunteerism serves as a bridge between policy formulation and community-level implementation, particularly in areas such as quality education, good health and well-being, climate action, and poverty reduction,” she said.

She urged institutions, youth groups, and civil society organisations in the state to align their activities with specific SDG targets to ensure long-term transformation and sustainability.
