FAAN Introduces Four Digital Payment Options for Airport Access Gates

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has introduced four digital payment options for access gates at airports nationwide as part of its ongoing “Operation Go Cashless” initiative.

The move, aimed at eliminating cash transactions and improving efficiency at entry points, aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s broader push toward a cashless economy, according to a statement from FAAN on its X handle on Tuesday.

The authority detailed the available payment channels as follows:

· FAAN Go Cashless Card – Described as the fastest and most seamless payment option.

· E-Tag – Designed for frequent users, enabling automatic deduction without stopping at gates.

· VIP Sticker – For authorised vehicles with approved access.

· ATM/Debit Card via POS – Available on-site, though processing time may vary due to banking network issues.

FAAN advised users to obtain their Go Cashless cards at any of its commercial offices or access gates. Users can also sign up and manage their cards online at www.gocashless.faan.gov.ng.

The cashless policy, which took effect on March 1, 2026, prohibits cash transactions at all FAAN pay points, including toll gates, car parks, and executive lounges. Launched in partnership with Paystack, the initiative was first announced in September 2025 and initially rolled out at major hubs such as Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

FAAN emphasised that the system is designed to make transactions “faster, safer, and more convenient,” while potentially increasing revenue by up to 75 per cent through improved transparency and reduced cash handling.

However, the first day of implementation was marked by challenges, including vehicular gridlock at Lagos and Abuja airports, which caused some travellers to miss flights. Motorists without prepaid cards resorted to POS payments, leading to delays.

FAAN has appealed for patience and urged frequent users to preload their cards in advance to avoid future disruptions.
