Suspected Boko Haram Attack in Borno Leaves Multiple Soldiers, Civilians Dead

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have launched a deadly attack in Ngoshe town, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, resulting in the deaths of several soldiers and civilians, with many others unaccounted for.

Security sources told Harmattan News that the attackers, believed to be affiliated with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), struck around 4am on Wednesday, conducting a highly coordinated assault that lasted until daybreak.

The insurgents overran a military base identified as the 82 Division Task Force Battalion under 26 Brigade before advancing to attack a nearby camp housing internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Witnesses reported that the terrorists ransacked the community, searching homes for soldiers in hiding. They also set armoured tanks and military vehicles ablaze and carted away an unspecified quantity of ammunition.

A military source described the scene: “The terrorists overran the base with their large numbers, burnt the camp with all the military equipment, and later attacked the IDP camp. They burnt all the buildings there and then went into the community searching for soldiers hiding among civilians.”

The source added that the full casualty figure remains unknown as more bodies continue to be recovered. Many residents and soldiers fled into the bush for safety.

This incident is the latest in a series of attacks on military formations in the region. It follows a recent assault on a Forward Operating Base at Banki Junction along the Bama-Gwoza Road, where a Army Major and several soldiers lost their lives.

Last month, another military outpost in Jakana, Kaga Local Government Area, was attacked, resulting in the destruction of armoured vehicles and the theft of ammunition.

The Nigerian Army has yet to officially comment on the latest incident.
