Akpabio Urges Senators to Use Public Funds for National Development
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged senators to use public funds responsibly, prioritizing policies that uplift citizens’lives and promote sustainable growth
Akpabio made the call during his welcome address at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday.
He stressed that lawmakers must prioritise policies that strengthen institutions, expand opportunities, and deliver meaningful progress to Nigerians.
The Senate President described the national budget as more than figures on paper, calling it a “declaration of national intention” that reflects the hopes of farmers, traders, students, and workers.
“A budget tells our citizens where we choose to invest our energies, what priorities we pursue and what future we seek to build,” Akpabio said.
He urged senators to ensure that the budget reflects the aspirations of the Nigerian people through diligence and oversight by sectoral committees.
Akpabio highlighted that Nigeria faces real challenges that demand clarity of purpose, courage, and determination.
He encouraged senators to debate vigorously but act wisely, differ in opinion yet remain united in service to the republic.
“Great nations are not built by those who shrink from difficulty; they are built by those who confront it with courage and determination,” he added.
The Senate President also mourned the passing of Barinada Mpigi, describing him as a patriot dedicated to his constituents and democratic ideals. He extended condolences to the late senator’s family and the people of Rivers South-East.
“Sen. Mpigi was a man of calm strength, cooperative spirit and unwavering commitment to the legislative process,” Akpabio said.
Akpabio’s address underscores the Senate’s role in responsible governance, citizen welfare, and the importance of public service.
