Bullying: Igbinedion school student to be Prosecuted in Juvenile Court

Authorities in Edo State have confirmed that students arrested over the viral bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre will be prosecuted in a family court, in line with Nigeria’s juvenile justice system.

The Edo State Police Command said the suspects, all minors, would be charged under provisions of the Child Rights Act and other relevant laws that balance accountability with rehabilitation.

The development follows widespread outrage sparked by a viral video showing a student being physically assaulted by peers within the school premises. The incident prompted swift intervention by authorities, leading to the arrest of those involved after a detailed investigation.

Police authorities also disclosed that measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence, including the expansion of the Operation Safe Schools initiative across secondary schools in the state.

The initiative is expected to address lapses in supervision, strengthen safety mechanisms, and reinforce discipline among students.

In addition, the command activated its Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, aimed at sensitising students and school administrators on behavioural conduct and the dangers of violence.

The management of Igbinedion Education Centre had earlier expelled the students implicated in the incident, but authorities stressed that the matter has gone beyond internal disciplinary action and now falls within the ambit of criminal justice.

The case has reignited national concern over bullying and student safety in schools, with stakeholders calling for stricter enforcement of anti-bullying policies, improved monitoring systems, and greater involvement of parents and school authorities.

Police assured that justice would be served while safeguarding the rights and welfare of the minors involved, urging the public to remain calm as legal proceedings commence.
