Chelsea Agree Record £117m Deal for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers
Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign midfielder Morgan Rogers in a blockbuster deal worth a club-record £117 million. The historic transfer sets a new benchmark as the highest fee ever paid for an English footballer.
The 23-year-old midfielder is set to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea retaining an option to extend the deal by an additional season. Rogers is scheduled to undergo his medical in London on Monday following the conclusion of his international duties with England at the ongoing 2026 World Cup.
The £117 million figure surpasses the previous record for an English player set just weeks ago when Manchester City paid £116 million for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. It also eclipses Chelsea’s internal transfer record, overtaking the £107 million package used to secure Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández in 2023.
The marquee signing marks a major statement of intent for newly appointed Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who is actively reshaping the squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
Rogers’ career has progressed rapidly over the last two seasons. After developing in Manchester City’s academy and experiencing a stint in the Championship with Middlesbrough, he joined Aston Villa in February 2024. Under the guidance of Unai Emery, Rogers excelled, scoring 21 goals in 85 league appearances and helping Villa secure a Europa League title last season. His club performances earned him a senior England call-up, where he has since secured 21 caps and featured prominently during England’s summer World Cup campaign.
