Peter Obi Commends Nigerian Nurses, Pledges Greater Support on World Nurses Day

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised Nigerian nurses and midwives for their dedication and resilience in the country’s healthcare sector, marking this year’s World Nurses Day.

Describing nurses as the backbone of the nation’s health system, Obi acknowledged their critical contributions to healthcare delivery across Nigeria. He noted that he has consistently supported nursing and midwifery schools nationwide, recognising the profession’s importance to national development.

Obi highlighted the difficult conditions under which Nigerian nurses operate, including poor work environments, shortages of equipment, high patient-to-nurse ratios, and immense physical and mental stress. He commended their courage and dignity in keeping the health sector functional despite these challenges.

He also applauded Nigerian nurses making strides internationally, leading research and clinical practice, and raising the country’s profile on the global stage.

The former Anambra State governor reaffirmed his commitment to the profession, promising greater investment in education and training. He stated that his vision for a renewed Nigeria includes ensuring that the hard work and sacrifices of nurses are duly recognised and that they remain globally competitive.
