Rivers Governor Fubara Steps Down from APC Governorship Race
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress governorship primary election in the state.
In a personally signed statement on Wednesday, Fubara said the decision followed extensive consultations with his family, friends, and political associates. He pledged to support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.
The governor described the decision as difficult but necessary, stating that leadership demands sacrifice and that personal ambition must sometimes give way to the collective interest of the people.
He added that Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and that peace, stability, and unity must take precedence over personal interests.
Fubara thanked his supporters for their loyalty and acknowledged that many would feel disappointed by his withdrawal. He said his silence in recent weeks was deliberate and strategic, guided by the higher interest of the state.
The governor thanked the APC leadership and President Bola Tinubu for their support and encouragement. He urged party faithful to remain united, insisting that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as weakness or surrender.
Fubara’s political journey has been turbulent. He rose under his predecessor Nyesom Wike, serving as Accountant-General before winning the 2023 governorship election on the PDP platform. However, a bitter fallout with Wike over political control led to a protracted crisis.
In March 2025, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and lawmakers for six months. A sole administrator was appointed. Fubara was later reinstated following political negotiations.
The governor said he would continue serving the people of Rivers State until the end of his tenure.
