Nigerian National Arrested in Istanbul Over Alleged $2.5 Million Online Fraud Scheme
A Nigerian national has been apprehended by Turkish law enforcement in connection with an international online fraud scheme that allegedly fleeced a Hong Kong-based dentist out of $2.5 million over a two-year period.
The suspect, identified as Kingsley O., was arrested alongside four accomplices in the Esenyurt district of Istanbul Province following a joint cross-border tracking effort by judicial and police authorities.
Investigative reports indicate that the suspect utilized a false digital identity, posing as an American businessman named “Richard.” He reportedly initiated contact with the victim, Siu P.Y.F., via an online platform in 2020, eventually establishing a long-distance relationship under the pretense of a future marriage.
Over the course of their communication, the suspect allegedly convinced the victim that he was spearheading a major investment project in Istanbul but faced temporary liquidity issues. Believing the matrimonial promises, the victim transferred a total of $2.5 million in multiple installments to various Turkish bank accounts between 2020 and 2022.
The scheme came to light after the individual cut off all communication upon securing the funds. Following an initial, inconclusive inquiry by the Hong Kong police, the victim retained a Turkish legal representative to file a formal complaint with the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Operatives from the Istanbul Police Department’s Fraud Bureau successfully mapped the financial trail, identifying and arresting five local account holders who received the illicit transfers. While four of the account holders denied knowledge of the underlying fraud, one suspect confessed to withdrawing the incoming funds and delivering them directly to a Nigerian national known to him as “Richard.”
This breakthrough led detectives directly to Kingsley O., whom security agencies have labeled the suspected mastermind of the operation. Although the principal suspect denied the allegations during interrogation, he and his co-defendants have been officially arraigned in court under tight security following the conclusion of the preliminary police investigation.
