Heavy Security Deployed in Ekiti Community After Unrest Leaves Police Station Damaged, Palace Targeted

A heavy security presence remains in Isan Ekiti, within the Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State, following an outbreak of violence that left a local police post severely damaged and the traditional ruler’s palace targeted by angry residents.

The unrest was reportedly sparked by the death of a local youth, which community members blamed on a security operative stationed in the town. Driven by anger over the incident, a crowd converged on the police facility, vandalizing the structure and setting portions of it on fire.

The situation rapidly escalated as the crowd marched on the palace of the town’s traditional ruler, the Onisan of Isan-Ekiti. Protesters accused the monarch of a sluggish response to the youth’s death. While the full extent of the property damage at the palace is still being assessed, witnesses confirm parts of the outer compound were breached.

Gunshots were heard throughout the area as reinforcing security forces moved in to disperse the gathering and restore order. The sudden escalation forced local business owners to shut down and drove many residents indoors, effectively paralyzing commercial activities in the community.

The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the outbreak of violence but maintained that tactical teams have successfully brought the situation under control. A command spokesperson stated that an investigation has been launched into both the initial death of the youth and the subsequent destruction of public and private property.

Local leaders have appealed to the youth for calm, urging the state government to ensure a transparent investigation into the initial killing to prevent further unrest.
