Senate Set to Confront Internal Tensions Over Disputed Suspension Report

Fresh internal friction is building within the Nigerian Senate as lawmakers prepare to cut their recess short for an emergency plenary session on Tuesday. Sources within the National Assembly indicate that the chamber may launch an official inquiry into controversial remarks regarding how signatures were compiled for a committee report that led to a high-profile disciplinary action.

The dispute stems from statements made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole during a recent television interview regarding the March 2025 six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for alleged gross misconduct.

Oshiomhole initially suggested that attendance signatures from previous meetings were improperly attached to the final disciplinary report to falsely indicate broad consensus. While he later issued a public clarification denying that he had explicitly accused anyone of forgery and expressed regret for any institutional embarrassment caused, multiple high-ranking senators remain deeply unsatisfied with the blow to the upper chamber’s credibility.

Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu strongly rejected any claims of procedural manipulation, describing the narrative as unthinkable. Adaramodu emphasized that legislative business is conducted under strict media and public scrutiny, and affirmed that the Senate will formally review the comments on Tuesday to establish a definitive institutional stance.

Adding weight to the controversy, the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Ireti Kingibe, publicly aligned with the concerns over committee transparency.

Kingibe revealed during a broadcast interview that despite being a member of the committee in question, she was never given access to review or endorse the final recommendations against Akpoti-Uduaghan. She explained that she had signed a general attendance sheet during an early meeting before departing for an official tax reform retreat, and only later discovered her name was linked to the finalized suspension order.

The emergency session, officially summoned by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to address urgent national security matters, is now widely expected to serve as the battleground for this brewing procedural showdown, as lawmakers push to safeguard the integrity of legislative records.
