Oyo State Revises Academic Calendar, Sets Resumption Date Following Strike Suspension
The Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has announced a revised academic calendar for all public primary and secondary schools in the state, confirming that classes will resume on Monday, July 6, 2026.
The adjustment, formalized in a circular signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. B.T. Oyinloye, follows the recent suspension of a month-long industrial action by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT). The strike, which began on June 1, 2026, was initiated by the union to protest the abduction of teachers and students and the killing of two educators during an attack on schools in the Oriire Local Government Area on May 15.
According to the new schedule, the current academic session will continue for six weeks, officially concluding on Friday, August 14, 2026. Following the end of the term, students and staff will observe a four-week break, which is slated to run from August 17 through September 11, 2026.
The ministry further confirmed that the 2026/2027 academic session is scheduled to commence on Monday, September 14, 2026.
The decision to resume comes after negotiations between the state government and the NUT leadership. Union officials indicated that the strike was suspended primarily to prioritize the educational needs of students who had been out of the classroom since the security crisis unfolded.
