Adeyanju Condemns Cleric’s Muslim-Muslim Ticket Remarks, Warns Against Religious Tension

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has criticized comments made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahya Jingir regarding the continued adoption of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, warning that divisive religious rhetoric threatens national cohesion.

Adeyanju emphasized that Nigeria is a pluralistic society whose constitution protects religious diversity. He urged religious leaders to leverage their influence to foster peace and unity rather than incite discord between different faith groups.

Highlighting the practical issues facing citizens, Adeyanju questioned the direct benefits of religiously aligned tickets, noting that political governance should be evaluated by its ability to address inflation, security, economic growth, and public welfare. He called on politicians and clerics to respect the nation’s diverse ethnic and religious composition.

Adeyanju’s comments were in response to a widely circulated video from an event attended by political figures, including Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf and Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi. In the video, Sheikh Jingir advocated for the continuation of the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket strategy for the 2027 general elections, commending its application in the 2023 presidential race.
