2027 Election: Atiku, Obi Step Up Plans for Campaign Councils

As political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, leading opposition candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are intensifying consultations to finalise their campaign structures and nationwide mobilisation plans.

Atiku’s camp confirmed that discussions on the composition of its presidential campaign council are at an advanced stage, with plans underway to unveil the leadership team and officially launch the campaign in the coming weeks. The campaign is also expected to introduce its fundraising framework and policy agenda as preparations progress.

Among the key proposals expected to feature prominently in Atiku’s campaign is a targeted fuel subsidy model designed to support local refining, reduce pressure on consumers and stimulate domestic production.

Similarly, Peter Obi’s political platform is holding consultations on the formation of its campaign council and strategy for the election season. Party officials said decisions on leadership appointments, campaign timelines and nationwide engagements would be concluded after an upcoming meeting of stakeholders.

The party plans to take its message across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory as part of efforts to build grassroots support ahead of the presidential election.

Meanwhile, vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso has criticised the composition of the ruling party’s presidential campaign council, arguing that voters should carefully assess the records of those seeking another mandate.

Kwankwaso expressed concerns about the participation of senior public officials in campaign-related roles, questioning whether such appointments align with expectations of institutional neutrality and public trust.

Elsewhere, the Labour Party said it was still finalising details of its campaign timetable, while the Young Progressives Party announced plans to officially commence its presidential campaign on September 9, beginning with activities in Lagos before expanding to other parts of the country.

The YPP said its campaign structure was already operational across states, local government areas and wards, with technology expected to play a major role in its voter engagement strategy.

With campaigns now officially underway, political parties are expected to intensify consultations, unveil campaign teams and expand voter outreach efforts as the race for the 2027 presidency gains momentum.
