Tinubu Orders Urgent Intervention on Benin-Agbor-Asaba, Ekiti-Kogi Roads

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene in the worsening condition of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road and the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti road corridors in Edo, Delta, Ekiti and Kogi states.

The directive followed growing concerns over the hardship faced by motorists and commuters using the affected roads, with some travellers reportedly spending several hours and, in some cases, days on the routes.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, on Tuesday, August 25.

Umahi said the ministry had immediately commenced steps to address the situation and restore movement along the affected corridors.

“President Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible,” the minister said.

As part of the intervention, Umahi directed the Minister of State for Works to lead a team of ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis to assess the extent of the deterioration and commence urgent remedial works.

The ministry said officials were already on the ground as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, to begin the intervention in Ekiti and Kogi states.

While the team moved to the Ekiti-Kogi corridor, Umahi travelled to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees to initiate a similar intervention on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road.

The meeting in Benin is expected to involve representatives of the Edo and Delta state governments as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The stakeholders are expected to work out immediate measures to ease the difficulties faced by motorists and commuters on the strategic corridor.

Umahi expressed concern over the condition of the roads and apologised to motorists and commuters who had been stranded or delayed for extended periods.

The minister also took responsibility for the situation and assured road users that the Federal Government’s intervention would not be limited to temporary measures.

He said immediate remedial actions would be implemented alongside permanent solutions aimed at restoring the roads and improving their long-term reliability.
