First Niger Bridge Shut For Emergency Repairs

The First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, has been fully closed to traffic by the Federal Ministry of Works for emergency maintenance and rehabilitation.

The closure, which commenced today, September 7, 2026, is expected to last until September 21.

The ministry said the intervention became necessary because of the deteriorated condition of the bridge’s carriageway and damage to some components caused by vandalism, including parts of the expansion-joint steelwork and stanchion and steel-truss nuts and bolts.

The works will include the removal of the deteriorated asphalt surface and laying of a new approximately 40mm asphalt wearing course, alongside other maintenance and safety works.

The Federal Government will also install solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras as part of measures to improve safety and deter vandalism.

Motorists have been directed to use the Second Niger Bridge through Obosi towards Asaba, Delta State, during the closure.

The ministry said traffic diversion arrangements, road signs, safety barriers and traffic-control personnel would be deployed to minimise disruption and protect road users and construction workers.

The repair works are expected to be carried out day and night to accelerate completion.
