Panic As Another Building Collapses in Abuja

A building has collapsed in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, barely hours after the Development Control Department in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) sealed the structure and directed occupants to vacate the premises.

It was gathered that occupants of the building were earlier on Monday issued a quit notice by the FCTA’s department of development control after the structure had shown signs of distress.

The FCT Police Command said it received a distress call concerning the incident at about 7:45pm on Monday.

A statement by the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said a police response team was immediately deployed to the scene.

Similarly, Lere Olayinka, media aide to Nyesom Wike, the FCT minister, who provided an update on the building collapse, said a rescue operation was under way at the site.

Adeh said the team was joined by personnel of the National Emergency Management Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, Federal Fire Service, Security Service Department, Federal Capital Territory Administration and other relevant emergency agencies in the rescue operation.

Adeh said preliminary findings showed that the building had previously been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control.
