Buhari To Launch New Naira Notes Today

President Muhammadu Buhari will today  (Wednesday) unveil the newly designed naira notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Today’s launch is coming days earlier than the December 15 date slated for the event.

CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, made this known while briefing the media at the Monetary Policy Communique (MPC) held on Tuesday.

He reiterated that there is no going back on the January 31st deadline for discontinuation of the use of the old notes, adding that the bank is relying on their law to push the policy forward.

Meanwhile, Emefiele also called on Nigerians in the diaspora to take note of the window as there will be no extension to accommodate them.

According to him, the apex bank will not delay the launch of the new banknotes just to allow Nigerians abroad to deposit the old naira in their possession.

He said: “Let me crack a joke; if you are a diaspora Nigerian, you are not supposed to be spending naira. You can not spend naira in the US or London, so you have no reason to keep naira. So we don’t have business with you. We would not wait for you to bring your naira. we would not change any deadline; what we have done is not against the law. It is in tandem with the law.”

The CBN Governor appreciated the Presidency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Senate for the support they gave towards the redesign of the naira.
