Abia Governor Reports 414 Roads Built, Debt Cut by 60% in Three Years

The Abia State Government has constructed 414 roads measuring approximately 864.12 kilometres across the state over the past three years.
Governor Alex Otti also disclosed that his administration has reduced the state’s debt profile by about 60 percent during the same period.
During a monthly media chat in Umuahia, the governor outlined that all the completed roads were equipped with street lights and drainage systems. He added that another 82 roads covering about 212 kilometres are currently under construction at various stages of completion.
The state’s debt, which stood at about 191 billion naira in 2023, had dropped to less than 50 billion naira by the end of 2025. An independent fiscal sustainability ranking reportedly moved Abia from 17th position in 2023 to fourth in 2025.
In environmental sanitation, the state now evacuates about 13 tonnes of refuse weekly, with over 2,000 jobs created through the Abia State Environmental Agency.
On transportation, new electric buses are expected to arrive by July, while a new bus terminal in Umuahia is set for inauguration on May 27. Charging stations are also being installed in Umuahia and Aba to support the electric bus initiative.
In land administration, 4,707 Certificates of Occupancy have been signed. This figure reportedly exceeds the total number of C of O signed between 1999 and 2023. A new Abia Master Plan developed with UN Habitat is awaiting launch, while four million land documents have been digitised.
In education, smart schools are being completed in Ubakala and Umuomaiukwu, with additional teachers recruited across the state. In the health sector, 821 healthcare professionals have been recruited, with 771 already on duty. Over 93,000 residents have enrolled in the state health insurance scheme.
A total of 277 primary healthcare centres have been retrofitted, with 121 fully functional. Reconstruction work is ongoing at general hospitals in Ikwuano, Arochukwu, Okeikpe, and Ohafia, while tertiary health institutions are undergoing major upgrades.
Governor Otti stated that the administration remains focused on human capital development, infrastructure renewal, fiscal responsibility, and restoring the dignity of the people of Abia State.
