Abia Govt Suspends Assembly Clerk Irokansi Over Misconduct Claims

The Abia State Government has suspended John Pedro Irokansi, the Clerk of the State House of Assembly, following allegations of misconduct.
The suspension was announced in a letter dated Friday, May 29, 2026, and signed by the state Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere.
After the suspension, the government appointed Promise Onwukwe, a Deputy Director in the Legislative Department of the Abia State House of Assembly, as the Acting Clerk, effective immediately.
The government did not share details about the allegations against Irokansi but said the Acting Clerk will stay in the role while investigations continue.
The directive told Onwukwe to take full responsibility for running the Clerk’s office until the investigation ends or new instructions are issued by the authorities.
He was also told to protect all government assets, official records, and documents entrusted to him, in accordance with existing regulations.
Irokansi has served as Clerk of the Abia State House of Assembly for about sixteen years.
During that time, he worked under three different state administrations.
