Adamawa Police Nab Man Over Alleged Cyberbullying of Traditional Ruler
The Adamawa State Police Command has apprehended a 31-year-old man, Buriba Israel of Jambutu in Yola South Local Government Area, over allegations of cyberbullying and criminal intimidation directed at a First-Class Chief, Hamman Bachama, Daniel Samaila.
According to a statement released on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, police condemned the misuse of social media to harass, intimidate, and spread unverified, offensive claims against traditional institutions and prominent figures in society.
The statement said preliminary findings showed the suspect had published and circulated social media posts containing allegations against the traditional ruler, content the police described as offensive and damaging to his reputation and standing.
“The suspect was arrested following a formal complaint and a subsequent Police investigation into the alleged online activities. Relevant electronic devices and other materials linked to the alleged offences have been recovered and are undergoing further forensic examination as investigation continues,” the statement read.
While acknowledging that citizens are entitled to freedom of expression, the command stressed that such rights come with responsibility and must be exercised within legal limits.
“The use of social media to harass, threaten, intimidate, defame, or deliberately circulate harmful content against individuals or institutions will not be tolerated,” the statement added.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Kabir Hassan, has ordered a thorough investigation into the matter, warning that the suspect would face full legal consequences if found guilty.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the dignity of traditional institutions, preserving public order, and preventing the digital space from being used for intimidation, cyberbullying, or other criminal conduct.
