Adelabu: Rescue Video Sparks Online Debate, Reno Omokri Counter Claims It was Staged

Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has weighed in on the controversy surrounding the police rescue of relatives of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, after some social media users alleged that the operation was staged.

Omokri, in a post shared on his official 𝕏 account on Sunday, directly responded to critics questioning the authenticity of the rescue video, insisting that anyone making such claims must be ready to back them up with evidence.

Report had emerged earlier that the Nigeria Police Force successfully rescued Mrs Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, following their abduction in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The rescue operation, which reportedly took place at about 7:30 pm on Saturday, June 6, 2026, ended with the victims being recovered alive.

Mrs John-Paul is said to be the younger sister of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

However, shortly after footage of the operation surfaced online, some social media users alleged that the rescue was staged, triggering heated debate across digital platforms.

Reacting to one of the claims, Omokri challenged a user identified as Okafor Samuel, who had questioned the credibility of the operation, urging him to substantiate his allegations.

He maintained that making unverified claims about security operations could amount to a criminal offence, especially when such statements have the potential to cause public panic or discredit government institutions.

Omokri further insisted that those behind the allegations should be prepared to present proof if called upon by authorities.

He also referenced reports that some of the suspected kidnappers had been arrested alive, suggesting that investigators could provide clearer answers on the matter.

The former presidential aide warned that spreading misinformation about sensitive security incidents could attract legal consequences.

According to him, individuals who make such claims should not only be ready to defend their statements but also accept responsibility if they are unable to substantiate them when required.

Omokri concluded by urging caution in public commentary on security-related issues, stressing the need for accuracy and responsibility in online discourse.
