Amusan Wins Nigeria’s First Gold at 2026 African Athletics in Accra
Nigeria has recorded its first gold medal at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, following a remarkable performance by Tobi Amusan in the women’s 100 metres hurdles .
Amusan, who is the current world record holder, clinched the gold medal ahead of Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller, who settled for silver.
Fellow Nigerian athlete Adaobi Tabugbo also delivered a strong performance, winning the bronze medal in the same event.
The win is Amusan third African Championships gold and it was presented to her by the World Athletics President, Sebastian Coe.
Speaking after the race, the Nigerian star encouraged young athletes not to allow fear or negative opinions discourage them from pursuing their ambitions, noting that persistence and self-belief remain key to succom
“Don’t let anyone talk fear into your dreams. I remember when I started hurdling, I heard a lot of “Oh, nobody is going to do well as a hurdler from Africa. And guess who is the World Record holder: me” Tobi said
