Anambra Police Intensify Crackdown on Cultism, Drug Abuse, and Fake Kidnappings

The Anambra State Police Command has stepped up its fight against cultism, drug abuse, and other rising social vices, arresting 54 suspects and recovering a large quantity of hard drugs in coordinated operations across the state.

In a press briefing, the Command expressed alarm over the rising trend of moral decay among youths, particularly those between the ages of 18 and 26. Despite previous breakthroughs, cases of fake kidnappings, cult-related violence, and drug trafficking continue to pose serious threats to peace and security.

The Command cited recent disturbing incidents, including a young lady who conspired with her boyfriend to stage her own kidnapping, extorting ₦3 million from her parents, and another couple who similarly orchestrated a ransom scheme that cost the victim’s family ₦1 million. In addition, suspected cultists recently opened fire during a burial ceremony in Ezi-Ogidi, Idemili North LGA, killing four people and injuring fifteen.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga described these acts as unacceptable, stressing that poor parental supervision and declining family guidance have contributed to the menace. He revealed that the Command is deploying both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches—including surveillance, patrols, targeted raids, and community engagement—to combat the problem.

In one operation on September 12, operatives of the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS) arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Chiderah Obochi, along the Old Onitsha/Awka Road. A search uncovered cannabis in his possession, and his confession led police to a house in Umudioka Village, where 11 bags of Cannabis Sativa were recovered. The substances are being handed over to the NDLEA for further action.

In a separate raid on September 14, operatives stormed a black spot in Ogidi, Idemili North LGA, where cultists were reportedly converging. A total of 53 suspects—38 males and 15 females—were arrested. They are currently undergoing screening, with those found culpable to face prosecution.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to restoring order and ensuring Anambra remains safe for all law-abiding citizens.”
