Anambra youths protest alleged killing of 26-year-old by anti-touting squad

Hundreds of youths from Mgbakwu community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State took to the streets on Friday to protest the alleged killing of a 26-year-old man, Chinyeaka Ike, by operatives of the state’s Special Anti-Touting Squad.

The incident reportedly happened around 8pm on Thursday in the area, sparking outrage among residents, especially young people, who accused security agencies of repeated harassment and extrajudicial actions.

The death drew strong emotions as the victim was said to be the only son of his parents and had recently married, with his wife expecting their first child next month.

Angered by the incident, hundreds of protesters marched from Mgbakwu to the Anambra State Government House in Awka on Friday, carrying the remains of the deceased along with placards and green leaves. Many of the placards read, “End persistent intimidation and violence by state task forces.”

A spokesperson for the youths, Arinze Nwoye, told journalists that SASA operatives stormed the area and began apprehending young people indiscriminately. He alleged that Ike and another youth tried to flee but were pursued, and the deceased was shot and later killed under brutal circumstances.

Nwoye called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to address the growing problem, noting that the deceased was a hardworking and promising young man. He said the community did not want to take the law into its own hands, which was why they chose to complain to the governor. He also stated that the community had supported the governor in both elections and no longer wanted SASA operating in Mgbakwu.

A community leader, Chimaobi Egwu, shared footage of the deceased on social media and accused security groups of exceeding their mandate. In a letter addressed to the governor and security agencies, he described the agencies as a source of fear for residents and pointed to a similar incident in Mgbakwu less than a year ago involving another group, suggesting a pattern of alleged abuse.

Other residents echoed similar concerns, alleging that multiple security outfits, including SASA, frequently carry out raids that disrupt daily life and create an atmosphere of tension.

The protesters urged Governor Soludo to urgently review the activities of enforcement agencies in the state to prevent extrajudicial killings, stressing that law enforcement must operate within the law and with respect for justice and human rights.

Addressing the protesters, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Ben Nwankwo, described the situation as deeply troubling and extended the government’s condolences to the bereaved family.

He said the governor was not happy with the development and had directed the police and the Department of State Services to begin an immediate investigation. He urged the protesters to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, assuring them that the government was committed to addressing the allegations.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, also acknowledged the gravity of the situation and disclosed that representatives of the protesting youths would meet with government officials to help resolve the matter.
