Army Deploys 150 Forest Guards, Donates Equipment to Boost Security in Kebbi
In a move to enhance community security and combat criminal activities in the North-West, the Nigerian Army has officially deployed 150 Forest Guards in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The exercise was operationalised on Tuesday by Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, at the Headquarters in Kangiwa.
To facilitate their operations, the Army provided the guards with essential logistics, including ten motorcycles, 150 sleeping kits, and food supplies. The equipment is intended to improve mobility, boost morale, and enhance the readiness of the personnel, who will operate under the supervision of the military.
Speaking at the event, Major General Koughna explained that the support was aimed at strengthening rapid response capabilities, particularly in remote and forested areas frequently used by criminal gangs.
“The motorcycles will improve patrol coverage and reduce response time, while the sleeping kits and food supplies will enhance the welfare of our personnel in the field,” he said.
He urged the guards to remain disciplined and professional, while also relaying the directive of the Chief of Army Staff that the guards must not turn their weapons against law-abiding citizens.
Representing Governor Nasir Idris, the state’s Commissioner for Home Affairs and Internal Security, Haliru Aliyu Wasabu, praised the military for what he described as timely support. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with security agencies to tackle banditry and insurgency.
The deployment of the Forest Guards is part of broader efforts by the military and state authorities to strengthen local security structures and sustain recent gains against insecurity in the region.
