Audio-Only Bookstore Opens in New York as Audiobook Popularity Surges

Audible has launched what it calls the world’s first bookless bookstore in Manhattan, a move that reflects the fast-growing appetite for audio storytelling among American readers.

The pop-up store, named the “Audible Story House,” opened Friday on the Lower East Side. Instead of physical books, shelves are lined with tablets called “story tiles.” Visitors can insert a tile into a player, listen to a short excerpt through headphones, and then access the full title on the Audible app.

The Amazon subsidiary’s CEO, Bob Carrigan, described the concept as a slightly wild idea that required considerable imagination. He said the month-long experience aims to bring audiobooks to life in a space where people can browse and connect with one another.

The venue also features a room equipped with speakers for listening without headphones, as well as a “Listening Bar” where staff members help customers find titles suited to their tastes.

Industry data from the Audio Publishers Association shows that audiobook sales in the United States reached $2.22 billion in 2024, nearly doubling over the past five years.

Audible, which dominates the market, offers paid subscriptions, individual purchases, and free access to some titles for Amazon account holders. The company said the new store taps into the nostalgia and communal feel of traditional book culture while bringing it fully into the present.
