Aus PM Apologises After Sydney Jewish Event Massacre

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has apologized to the country’s Jewish community following a devastating mass shooting at a Hanukkah event in Sydney’s Bondi Beach, which claimed 15 lives. “As Prime Minister, I feel the weight of responsibility for an atrocity that happened while I’m Prime Minister, and I’m sorry for what the Jewish community and our nation as a whole have experienced,” Albanese said, pledging to protect Jewish Australians and uphold their rights.

The attack, carried out by father-son duo Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24, was meticulously planned over months, including firearms training in rural New South Wales and a nighttime reconnaissance visit to Bondi Beach. The suspects, inspired by Islamic State, fired long-barrelled firearms into crowds gathered for the family-oriented celebration, killing 15 and wounding dozens.

Sajid Akram, an Indian national who entered Australia in 1998, was shot dead by police, while Naveed Akram, an Australian-born citizen, was charged with terrorism offenses, 15 counts of murder, and other crimes. He was transferred from hospital to prison on Monday.

The government plans to tighten gun laws, including capping firearm ownership, and introduce new hate speech laws. Australia’s domestic intelligence agency, ASIO, had previously investigated Naveed Akram but concluded he posed no threat.
