Canada’s Ontario Launches New Permanent Residence Pathway for Foreign Workers

The Canadian province of Ontario has officially opened applications for its newly introduced Workforce Priority Stream, offering eligible foreign workers a fresh pathway to permanent residency via the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program.

Beginning August 4, 2026, eligible foreign nationals with qualifying job offers can register an Expression of Interest through the online portal. The updated stream features three distinct pathways catering to higher-skilled workers, lower-skilled workers, and self-employed physicians licensed to practice and bill under the public health insurance plan.

Candidates are ranked using a points-based system introduced in July, with invitations to apply distributed through periodic draws. Once invited, applicants have 17 calendar days to submit their complete paperwork, while sponsoring employers must secure position approval within two weeks. Successful candidates can also secure a provincial support letter to apply for a temporary federal work permit while their permanent residency applications undergo final processing.

This rollout marks the first immigration pathway launched under Ontario’s broader modernization of the OINP, following the closure of previous streams earlier in the year. Additional streams focusing on healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, and exceptional talents are slated to follow in subsequent phases
