Chinese Envoy Pushes for Expanded Mandarin Language Education in Nigerian Schools

The Consul-General of China in Lagos, Ms. Yan Yuqing, has advocated for the expansion of Mandarin language instruction across Nigerian schools to boost youth competitiveness and strengthen bilateral relations between both nations.

Yuqing made the call during a visit to Grace Schools in Lagos, where she interacted with students participating in the institution’s long-standing foreign language program. The school originally introduced Mandarin into its curriculum in 2010 to align with China’s growing economic relevance.

Speaking on the visit, Yuqing highlighted that 2026 has been designated as the *China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchange*, placing educational and cultural cooperation at the forefront of bilateral initiatives. She stated that China remains committed to supporting Nigerian students through government-funded scholarships, teacher exchange programs, and infrastructure support.

China currently provides educational assistance through the Confucius Institute at the University of Lagos alongside language programs established in various primary and secondary schools. The envoy noted that deepening cultural and linguistic ties gives young Nigerians broader global opportunities while helping solidify mutual understanding between the two countries.

School administrators emphasized the strategic advantages of early foreign language acquisition. The Chief Executive Officer of Grace Schools, Mrs. Olatokunbo Edun, explained that Mandarin is taught from nursery levels up to senior secondary classes, preparing students for an increasingly interconnected job market. Edun noted that proficiency in Mandarin offers students a distinct advantage in international trade, business, and diplomacy. She revealed that through a partnership with the Confucius Institute, several teachers have been trained, with one six-year-old pupil already attaining HSK Level 3 an internationally recognized Chinese proficiency certification.

Parents and school officials welcomed the continued collaboration, noting that foreign language skills position young Nigerians to thrive in future international business ventures and diplomatic relations.
