Court to Open Registries on Weekends, Holidays for Pre-Election Cases

The Federal High Court of Nigeria has announced that its registries across all divisions will operate on weekends and public holidays to accommodate the filing of pre-election matters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The directive was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Chief Registrar of the court, Yahaya Shafa. According to the statement, the decision became necessary due to the strict constitutional and statutory deadlines governing the filing and determination of pre-election cases.

The notice informed legal practitioners that registries would be open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, but solely for pre-election matters. The court explained that the extended hours were expedient to ensure compliance with the limited time frames available for such cases.

Political parties across the country have been stepping up preparations for the 2027 elections, with several already conducting primaries for governorship, national and state assembly positions.
