Cyclist Killed in Lagos Truck Collision, Driver
A cyclist died on Monday after a collision with a DAF articulated truck under the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital Bridge along Airport Road in Ikeja.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the incident occurred at the traffic signal corridor. Preliminary findings indicate that both the cyclist and the truck were traveling from the Maryland direction when the cyclist failed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle while navigating the roundabout under the bridge.
LASTMA stated that the situation escalated rapidly, resulting in the cyclist being crushed and suffering fatal injuries on the spot.
Officials at the scene intercepted the truck driver, who had attempted to flee. The suspect was handed over to the Ikeja Police Division for investigation and prosecution.
The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit was called to remove the deceased’s body and restore normal traffic flow.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the cyclist’s family. He urged cyclists and commercial motorcycle riders to exercise caution, adhere to traffic regulations, and avoid highways and major roads where the risk of accidents is higher.
Giwa noted that the state government continues to run safety sensitization campaigns, advising vulnerable road users to limit their travel to inner roads and safer corridors.
LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to road safety enforcement and public education, appealing to all road users to obey traffic laws to prevent avoidable tragedies.
