Delta Assembly Sends Warning to Politicians Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Delta State House of Assembly has cautioned politicians and their supporters against acts of violence, intimidation and inflammatory rhetoric as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.

The Speaker of the House, Guwor Dennis, issued the warning on Wednesday during plenary as lawmakers resumed legislative activities after their annual recess.

Guwor said the 2027 elections should be centred on policies, ideas, competence, character and the ability of candidates to deliver meaningful development to the people.

He urged political parties, candidates, supporters and other participants in the electoral process to avoid personal attacks and conduct their campaigns in a manner that would preserve peace and democratic values.

The Speaker noted that campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections commenced on August 19, while campaigns for governorship and State House of Assembly candidates are expected to begin on September 9.

He stressed that political contests must not be allowed to degenerate into violence, describing elections as an opportunity for citizens to assess candidates and choose leaders based on their programmes and capacity to serve.

Guwor also described the proposed increase in Delta State’s State Constituencies from 29 to 38 as a major development ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said the creation of nine additional constituencies would improve grassroots representation and enable more communities to have a direct voice in the state legislature.

According to him, effective representation remains central to democracy, adding that the expansion would further strengthen citizens’ participation in governance.

With the resumption of plenary, the Speaker directed lawmakers to intensify work on pending Bills, Motions and Petitions.

He also urged committee chairmen and members to apply the knowledge acquired during their leadership training at the London Business School to their legislative responsibilities.

Guwor reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to effective legislation, oversight and quality representation, saying lawmakers must remain focused on issues affecting their constituents.

He commended the Delta State Government for organising the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit during the legislative recess, describing it as an important platform for showcasing the state’s economic potential to local and international investors.

The Speaker assured investors that the Assembly would continue to support policies and legislation aimed at creating a conducive environment for businesses and attracting investments into the state.

He also congratulated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the people of Delta State on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation.

Guwor subsequently urged lawmakers to return fully to legislative business and demonstrate greater commitment as they work to meet the expectations of their constituents during the remainder of the legislative year.
