Delta State Governor Calls for Collective Action Against Crime at Security Summit

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has called for a unified and collective approach to tackling terrorism, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, stating that maintaining public safety cannot be left solely to the government and security agencies.

The governor made the call during his keynote address at the Delta State Security Summit 2026, held at the Government House in Asaba. The event, themed “Security: A Collective Responsibility,” brought together a wide array of stakeholders, including security chiefs, local government chairmen, traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society groups, and business representatives.

Oborevwori emphasized that the protection of lives and property is the bedrock of any meaningful developmental stride, warning that economic growth and community prosperity are impossible under the shadow of fear and instability.

“Security remains the foundation of every prosperous society,” the governor stated. “Without peace and stability, economic growth slows, investments decline, and communities struggle to thrive. This is why the protection of lives and property remains one of the most important responsibilities of government.”

He noted that enduring peace requires an active partnership involving state authorities, security apparatuses, traditional and religious institutions, businesses, and everyday citizens.

To back this cooperative strategy, Oborevwori highlighted ongoing efforts by his administration to upgrade the state’s security architecture. This includes increased investment in logistical support and operational resources, alongside the recent restructuring of  Operation Delta Sweep the state’s joint security task force designed to combat high-level criminality.

Furthermore, the governor revealed that the State Executive Council has approved the construction of divisional police headquarters across all 25 local government areas. The proactive infrastructure push is intended to lay the groundwork for the eventual decentralization and establishment of state policing in the future.
